Second day of Bonfires on Haslemere Road
- MB (3rd Feb 2022  09:17:20)

Please can whoever is having another bonfire in their garden on or near Haslemere Road consider taking their rubbish to the tip or at least do on a day where there is some wind to disperse the smoke.

I have had the odd bonfire myself but only for an hour or so and always on a breezy day to minimise the effect on neighbours.

They’ve been doing some clearing and having bonfires in Radford Park all this week so it may well be those that you can smell on Haslemere Road.

I was actually going to ask about Radford Park and the bonfires. Presumed it was an organised thing but was walking through the other day and there was a fairly sizeable unattended fire - so glad to hear it is legitimate!

The bonfire I can see is definitely not in Radford Park and has been going all day. It’s in someone’s garden.

It’s one of the houses on the left as you travel towards Haslemere on the Haslemere Rd just between the New Cinema and the entrance to the old Alliance building. Their Garden backs over to the Green dragon and they have been regularly bonfires there for the past 7 years which in turn prompts one of the repeated and many posts about Bonfires on this forum.

Next time the bonfire is on walk up to the rear of the car park of the green dragon and peer over the fence to identify which garden of a possible 4-6 houses it actually is and report it with photos and video to the proper authority (not this forum - see the many previous posts on here whereby nothing comes off it) if anything you won’t need to peer over that fence whilst it burns as there will be a big black burn hole there already with or without a lit fire.

From the smell of it I think it’s a tradesman bringing his rubbish home and polluting the sky instead of paying the fees to dispose of correctly.

Whomever is doing it couldn’t give a toss about it or indeed a toss about what’s said here on this forum so gather evidence and introduce them to some authority whom can have an impact.

Hi Sam, that’s not good but the bonfire I am referring to is a lot further up Haslemere Road on the LHS opposite Manor Fields.

Whilst I'm not sure whether we have laws banning bonfires, it's more a case of being considerate, something that is very hit and miss in today's society, the most important thing at this time of year is to make sure you don't burn anything that could be a small animals home, where they are likely to be hibernating snugly under a pile of leaves and twigs, please be extra careful not to set them alight too, personally if in any doubt, I wouldn't risk it till Spring!

Crazy idea, but maybe just knock on the door and have a polite word with the person involved? At least as a starting point.

Plenty of laws on bonfires, it’s illegal to burn household rubbish and separately it’s illegal to cause a statutory nuisance to your neighbour with a bonfire. It’s also illegal to burn anything like plastics or anything that is highly toxic.

There is enough recorded evidence on this forum alone if you search the word “bonfire” it reveals a persistent and frequent amount of bonfires in Liphook.

This isn’t a one off dry garden waste or a bit of dry wood with kids and marshmallows here, it’s frequent careless pollution that’s clearly a major problem

Maybe we should start again once we've ascertained exactly where this bonfire is, there have been three suggestions so far. Surely a weekday in February when most people are out at work and their windows are shut with no washing on the line is a good day to have a bonfire? Liphook seems to have become very intolerant in recent years. Certainly wasn't like this years ago but I suppose that's progress (or regression.)
