Rookery
- Mike (6th Sep 2023 06:36:07)
Every morning I see hundreds of Rooks flying slightly East of North over where I live in Tower Road, and the reverse direction in the evening. Does anyone know where they roost at night, where their Rookery is?

Although a 'rookery' is probably the correct word for where the roost, I believe what you're seeing is the very lively village flock of jackdaws, not rooks.
I guess I know where they roost but unsure I'm at liberty to tell :)

Thanks Bush, good point. They fly quite high, so their size is difficult to gauge, but I should have remembered from youthful birdwatching days that whereas Jackdaws are fairly steady as they fly, Rooks are often a bit wobbly in flight. I understand about not revealing their roosting place.

The roosting flight (lasts beyond sunset) of the jackdaws is very erratic, seems playful and raucous!

They rest up in a few locations at night, namely the tall trees opposite the photo shop on London Road, the trees on Haslemere road in front of chiltlee manor and sometimes in the back gardens between.
They tend to prefer the bigger trees with more ever green thick leaves as opposed to the big trees around the back Rec. But they are happy to pick some smaller trees if those are inaccessible in the back gardens and don’t have any of us humans walking about below.
